MyMichigan Health Committed to Comprehensive Cancer Care
Midland, Mich. April 19, 2022 – In a unique twist to a traditional groundbreaking, MyMichigan Health held a Beam Hammering event yesterday to signify the beginning of construction on the James T. and Elsa U. Pardee Cancer Center (Pardee Cancer Center). The Center, to be positioned adjacent to MyMichigan Medical Center Midland, will be located at the site of the existing Towsley Building. The structure and footprint of the Towsley Building will remain; however, the interior will be rebuilt to meet the needs of the Pardee Cancer Center.
“We all know someone who has been touched by cancer and hearing the word cancer can set a person’s life into a tailspin,” said Greg Rogers, president and CEO of MyMichigan Health. “We are focused on the care of the communities that we serve, ensuring that care is provided as close to home as possible throughout the healing process. We are here today for each and every cancer patient and their families. This comprehensive cancer center will bring our cancer care experts into one location to provide an excellent patient experience.”
MyMichigan Health offers comprehensive cancer care focused on breast, lung, esophageal, colon, genitourinary and gynecologic cancers. The health system’s program includes access to a team of 23 providers specializing in cancer care, certified oncology nurses, radiation therapists, the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology, clinical trials, and a full range of support services.
“Our purpose is Creating Healthy Communities – Together and the Pardee Cancer Center helps us further that by bringing care and support services into one location,” said Melwyn Sequeira, M.D., surgical oncologist, endocrine surgeon and chief of the Oncology service line for MyMichigan Health. “Our goal is to be the region’s choice for cancer care and be recognized for our excellent quality of care provided in an environment that places a premium on the patient experience.”
The 115,000 square foot Pardee Cancer Center will bring the diagnostic, treatment, and support team under one roof to create an exceptional patient experience. It creates space for multiple specialists to see the patient on the same day, collaborate and provide the patient a plan of care without multiple appointments at multiple locations. The patients will benefit from the ease of access to services provided by Cancer Services and The Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund, which will be housed in the new facility. In addition, the Center provides space to grow and bring more specialists and services to the community.
Representatives from MyMichigan Health, Elsa U. Pardee Foundation, Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation, The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation and Dow Company Foundation took golden hammers to a beam to kick-off the construction.
Crews will begin demolition of the Towsley Building this week. The architectural design reflects the high standard of quality care patients have come to expect while providing an esthetically pleasing atmosphere for cancer care. The construction will take approximately two years.
The MyMichigan Health Foundation has received $17.3 million from area foundations and individual donors in support of the building of the Pardee Cancer Center. A community campaign will be announced later, those interested in making a donation may do so online at www.mymichigan.org/cancercenter or by calling (989) 839-1932.
